Why Dietetics?
Nutrition has been one of my strongest interests ever since the show "Honey, We're Killing the Kids" aired on TLC. This show absolutely fascinated me. I was captivated each week by watching a family transform from being unhealthy and overweight to preparing health-conscious meals and reaping the rewards of practicing healthy lifestyle choices. This inspired me to be that person that can enter someone's life and completely change them for the better through the use of nutrition.
Nutrition has also been a very important part of my life due to my family's medical history. My parents are both hypertensive as well as hypercholesterolemic, so just about every food item in my house is low-sodium, low-fat, and is relatively healthy. Seeing some of my friends dump the salt shaker on or slather butter on their food appalled me, and it is then that I realized that not everyone was brought up eating healthy foods. I personally make a conscious effort to eat a diet low in sodium and fat to help prevent high blood pressure and heart disease since I am genetically more likely to develop these conditions later on in life. It is this kind of proactive attitude towards nutrition that I want to instill in others that I believe could have a profound effect on the health of our nation as a whole.
